For extreme cold climates below -10°C, use a multi-grade 10W hydraulic oil. In consistently hot environments above 40°C, consider ISO VG 68 grade oil. Always verify the specific recommendation in your Cat 320's operator manual, as requirements may vary based on serial number and model year.

Key warning signs include sluggish boom, stick, or bucket movement indicating pressure loss; unusual noise from the hydraulic pump such as whining or grinding; overheating of hydraulic oil beyond normal operating temperature; visible oil leaks around cylinders, hoses, or fittings; erratic operation or jerky movements; and increased cycle times for standard operations. Additionally, if the hydraulic oil appears dark, contaminated, or smells burnt, immediate service is recommended. While universal hydraulic oils meeting ISO VG 46 specifications can technically work in a Cat 320, Caterpillar strongly recommends using their branded HYDO Advanced oils or equivalent premium anti-wear hydraulic fluids specifically formulated for heavy equipment. These specialized oils contain additive packages designed to protect high-pressure piston pumps, prevent wear on critical components, resist oxidation, and maintain viscosity across temperature extremes. Using lower-quality universal oils may void warranty coverage and can accelerate component wear, particularly in the main hydraulic pump which operates at pressures exceeding 5,000 PSI in Cat 320 excavators.

Primary contamination sources include seal wear allowing dirt ingress through rod seals on hydraulic cylinders; degraded breather filters permitting atmospheric dust and moisture entry; internal component wear generating metal particles; coolant leaks into the hydraulic system through damaged oil cooler cores; and improper service procedures introducing contaminants during oil changes. Water contamination often results from condensation in the hydraulic tank, especially in humid climates or machines with significant temperature cycling. Regular filter replacement, proper breather maintenance, and oil analysis are essential preventative measures to maintain hydraulic fluid cleanliness.

First, park the excavator on level ground and fully retract all cylinders—lower the boom completely, curl the bucket fully, and retract the stick to the storage position. Shut off the engine and wait 5-10 minutes for oil to settle and drain back to the tank. The hydraulic oil level sight glass is typically located on the side of the hydraulic tank near the operator's platform. The oil level should be visible between the minimum and maximum marks on the sight glass when cold.
